What it is
Some teens don't want to talk to you. Maybe they didn't choose to see you, maybe they've told their story to too many adults, or maybe sitting across from someone who asks questions just feels like a test. This guide is for those sessions. Every activity gives a teen something to do with their hands, eyes, or feet, so talking becomes optional instead of the main event. Each activity is marked on a simple talk dial, from "quiet is fine" to "open door," so you can match the teen in front of you today instead of the plan you walked in with. Every activity also has an "if they're in" line for going a little deeper and a "keep it light" line for backing off.
What's included
- Start here: why talk-optional activities work
- The talk dial: four levels, plus how to turn it up or down
- Eight helper moves (sit beside, let silence be, one question then wait, and more) + what a good session can look like
- Quick-find chart of all 30 activities with talk level, time, and page, plus ready-made picks (first visit, mad to be here, after a hard week, ten minutes left, starting to open up)
- 30 activities in six kinds: Side by Side, Draw It, Music & Screens, Pick a Side, Rate It, Walk & Talk. Each has 3 steps, time, what you need, an "if they're in" line, and a "keep it light" line
